Reynolds Apparatus
Product Code : EL-FML-11037
Quick Answer: Reynolds Apparatus is a set-up for studying types of flow and determining the Reynolds number, showing whether the flow is laminar or turbulent. Dye fed through a capillary tube into a borosilicate glass tube with a bell mouth entrance makes the flow pattern visible.
Last updated: October 2026

About This Product
Dye from a small container above the constant head tank runs through polythene tubing into the capillary at the centre of the bell mouth, marking the flow along the glass tube. Opening the cock at the far end changes the flow rate, which is measured with the cylinder and stop watch so the Reynolds number can be worked out at each setting. As engineering lab equipment in India for the FLUID MECHANICS LAB, it lets students see whether each flow is laminar or turbulent.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. How is the flow made visible?
Dye is fed from a small container through polythene tubing into a capillary tube placed centrally in the bell mouth, so it streams along the borosilicate glass tube.
Q2. How is the flow rate measured?
With the measuring cylinder and electronic stop watch supplied with the set-up. The flow is varied with the cock at the outlet end of the glass tube.
Q3. What utilities does it need?
A water supply and a drain.
