About This Product
Set close to the middle of a ferromagnetic sonometer wire without touching it, the electromagnet drives the wire while students adjust the vibrating length or tension until resonance gives a clear rise in amplitude, then record the resonating length and load. Driving the wire by magnetic attraction alone, this Magnetism accessory links electromagnet theory with sound and wave practicals such as finding AC frequency.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. Does the Sonometer Excitation Electromagnet include a sonometer? It is an excitation accessory. The sonometer, wire, bridges, transformer, slotted masses and hanger are not listed as included.
Q2. Why is the electromagnet placed near the middle of the wire? The middle of the wire is near an antinode for the fundamental mode, so the vibration is easier to excite and see at resonance.
Q3. Can it be connected directly to mains electricity? No. Connect it only to an isolated, step-down low-voltage AC source, switch off between observations, and stop if the coil or leads become excessively warm.
