About This Product
With the observer at the designated position, the source is activated and moved towards, past and away from the observation point so the class can compare the three observations. Teachers then explain that wavefronts arrive at shorter intervals during approach and longer intervals during recession, and link the effect to moving vehicles, radar and astronomy in Physics Miscellaneous Products lessons on sound.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. Why does the pitch rise as the source approaches? Successive sound wavefronts reach the observer at shorter intervals during approach, producing a higher observed frequency.
Q2. Why does the pitch fall as the source moves away? The wavefronts reach the observer at longer intervals during recession, producing a lower observed frequency.
